Let us start by defining exactly what original Medicare is:

“Original Medicare is a federal government health insurance program for those who qualify by age or disability. This program is divided into part “A” (inpatient/hospital coverage) and part “B” (outpatient/medical coverage).”

What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage plans are a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare CMS to provide all your part A & part B benefits.

Medicare Advantage is an “All-in-One” alternative to original Medicare. Many Medicare Advantage plans offer extra benefits that original Medicare doesn’t cover, like dental, hearing, vision, transportation, fitness clubs, over the counter drugs and more.

Most Medicare Advantage plans also offer prescription drug coverage (MAPD).

You need to have both parts (A & B) to be eligible for Medicare Advantage. Even if you have a pre-existing condition you may qualify to join a Medicare Advantage plan.

Your Options

There are different types of Medicare Advantage plans to choose from, including:

  • HMO (health maintenance organization) – HMO plans utilize in-network doctors and require referrals for specialists.
  • PPO (preferred provider organization) – PPO plans charge different rates based on in-network or out-of-network services.
  • SNP (special needs plans) – SNP plans help with chronic conditions, and dual eligibility (Medicare and Medicaid).

Keep in mind that some plans have zero premiums and some may have deductibles.
